Ole Bratt Birkeland

Ole Birkeland is a cinematographer who has worked on numerous drama's including Utopia and Mister John, he also decides the lighting and composition for commercials advertising for companies such as KFC and Budweiser. I have researched Birkeland for his input to the TV series Utopia, which has been captured very distinctively using high amounts of contrast between the very bright and punchy colours used for the show. The cinematography technique makes the show look very surreal and colourful which contrasts the brutally violent story line, thus making it seem like what your watching isn't in anyway as dark as it could be portrayed. What made me connect Birkeland's film work techniques to my two photographs, which can be seen below the two screenshots taken from Utopia, is the contrast in colours. As previously discussed, the contrast seen within my photographs make the image look fake because the greens look too vibrant to be real, giving the same affect as Birkeland's freeze frames.
I could apply Birkeland's high contrast look even further with my images to make them look increasingly surreal and unusual. Adding this technique along side my focus on objects within the frame that are subtly obscure and out of place will make the image look progressively surreal.
